EUROPEAN KARATE ORGANIZATION

Main Task

The referee committee (RC) is responsible for education of referees, maintaining as high as possible standards of judging/refereeing and selecting referees for specific tournaments.

EKO recognizes three levels of licenses for referees, in kata as well as kumite: A (highest), B and C.
In principle, before European Championships, the RC organizes a seminar for all referees that are active on the tournament.
If deemed desirable, the referee committee also organizes weekend courses and examinations.

The RC also closely watches developments in full contact karate, with regards to the safety of the karateka, for youth as well as adults. In practice, this means that the committee mainly focuses on the implementation of (new) rules in kumite. However, the RC is also continually judging whether the rules and interpretation contribute to the fairness in the results of fights and kata. If necessary, rules can be adjusted.
